With his roles as Dr. Lancaster in Sleepy Hollow and Lord Burghley in Elizabeth I, Ian can convincingly portray a perfect mix of Gonzalo’s innocent yet mocked naiveté and his insightful kindness that proves worthwhile through the play! Aside from his role as Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars, Ian has had a rich history with The Tempest that spans about 50 years through his roles as Trinculo with the Royal Shakespeare Company (1974), and even Prospero himself with both the Royal Shakespeare Company (2000) and BBC Radio 3 (2021)! Through Gonzalo, Ian’s casting serves as a metatextual succession by passing the torch and his knowledge onto the current actor who’ll play Prospero and fill his shoes!
