Synopsis

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood.

  • michaelmerriman Mirabel is late teens when Zachery is twelve and she paints his door. The book takes place twelve years later, when Zachary is twenty-four, making Mirabel late twenties to early thirties. Her mother is black and from New Zealand or Australia (clearly Australian in the audiobook) and her father is English.
