[2004][Once the borders of Hell threatened to engulf the rest of California Buffy and the Scoobies joined Angel and his team in a protracted war to save the world from apocalypse.] Enduring years of battle and grief following the deaths of Xander and Kennedy the exhausted survivors were desperate to end the war. Giles and Willow conceded that their only hope was to harness the power of the key to free the earth from the hell that ensnared it, though this meant returning the key to its incorporeal state. Despite Buffy's adamant refusal Dawn agreed to be sacrificed. Willow performed the spell that partitioned the boundaries of hell and earth sparing the world from total ruin and destroying Dawn in the process. Angel, Spike and Illyria disappeared during the war and were presumed dead. A despondent Buffy was left alienated from the world, becoming estranged from Willow and Giles whom she resented for their involvement in Dawn's death. After the crisis was settled the world was kept safe by the hundreds of active Slayers on patrol. What evil had not been vanquished was forced underground. Until...
