Jonathan Crane was bullied by his grandmother and lived in constant fear of her. His time at school was ruined by bullies who made fun of his thin build. When Jonathan had had enough, he engaged in "Violent Dancing," a form of martial arts that makes use of his slim physique, and he also created a chemical mixture that keeps crows away. Jonathan used to frighten some of his school's bullies by dressed as a scarecrow. Those people died, though, because his new scare tactics were too effective. The strength of fear astounds Crane, who pushes himself to learn more about it. He created Fear Toxin and then killed his grandmother after returning home. A few years later, Jonathan Crane was recruited to an university's department where he taught his students by participating in shady behavior. After killing those responsible for this and being immediately dismissed as a result, Crane began looking for employment elsewhere. He promises to strike terror throughout all of Gotham and beyond as revenge for the horrible life he had now that he is the chief psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum and has begun using the alias "Scarecrow" when conducting experiments on his patients.
