In 1990, Chris Claremont, who wrote The Phoenix Saga and Days of Future Past, wrote a script. Claremont and Stan Lee took their script to James Cameron who signed on as a producer and brought in his then-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, to direct. The film got side-tracked when Stan Lee brought up the idea of doing a Spider-Man film to Cameron who favored that over an X-Men adaptation.read more
