Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (b. 7 August 1890) is an American labor leader, activist, and feminist serving as Secretary of the Orthodox Syndicalist Section of the Combined Syndicates of America. Flynn was born in Concord, New Hampshire and became a full-time organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World at the age of seventeen. She traveled across the United States organizing strikes and protests from New York to Washington, becoming an outspoken advocate of workers' and women's rights. In 1920, she became a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union , a nonprofit organization that provides legal assistance in cases where it considers civil liberties to be at risk.
