Joker tricks Superman into killing a pregnant Lois Lane and destroying Metropolis. This event causes Superman to lose his mind and become a dictator. Superman establishes a regime that forces peace on Earth. Many heroes side with him. Batman opposes this tyranny and establishes an underground resistance movement. His goal: to overthrow Superman's regime and restore freedom. The war between the two old friends turns into a bloody civil war between the heroes.
