The story is set in 1816, in England, in a fictional town called Berrywoods. An industrial plant owned by the Gibb family goes bankrupt, and they lose all their money as a result, and may also lose their rented house, so they are threatened with poverty and homelessness. Their only daughter-a young girl named Jane-decides to save the family and decides to marry a rich Lord named Edward Parker, who is much older than her.
