Description of Helen Stallworth:
The only truly good person in the Stallworth family. Helen pities the people in The Triangle. She is frustrated by Marian’s exploitative ‘charity’ and goes along with the widow Staunton to do actual charity. At first she is horrified by the residents but comes to know them all by name, and offers medical/financial assistance. She is particularly close to Annie and Jemmie. While first shocked at their sexuality, she finds herself developing a more progressive mindset. She falls sick, and is kidnapped by the Shanks’. They plan to kill her but when her father dies, they consider themselves even. She is left with Annie and Jemmie, who move to Virginia and nurse her back to health. Age 18-20
