The two children played together for a time and were happy, but Elaine was being hunted by Dr. Kenneth Reed and the Kuryu Institute as part of a research program to develop psychic super-soldiers. The two escaped their pursuers briefly, fleeing on a subway train, but the cyborgs Wakayama, Amachi and Katsu forcefully stopped the train, resulting in Rat being injured and knocked unconscious.
