In vaguely colonial times, a scarecrow is brought to life by a witch, and becomes naive but curious about the world around him. One day, he witnesses a young woman named Polly who lives in the nearby town and becomes smitten with her. Out of concern for what would happen if the people saw a scarecrow walking around, she gives the scarecrow, named Feathertop, a magic spell that allows him to retain his human form, so long as his hat remains on his head at all times and the feather in his hat.
