Raquel Ervin was born in Paris Island, the poorest and most crime-ridden neighborhood in Dakota. She yearned to become a writer ("just like Toni Morrison"), but lacked motivation. That is, until she met Augustus Freeman IV, a stranded alien with superhuman powers.
