Synopsis

In 1944, RAF pilot Peter Williamson is shot down over the Channel, losing his leg. He wakes in a pristine Brighton hospital, tended by a nurse and doctor, but oddities—hard water, wrong uniforms, German bombers—hint he’s in a German-run facility in occupied France, per Dahl’s story. Flashbacks show Peter’s life at a quirky Kent RAF base, bantering with pilots, a mechanic, and a barmaid, haunted by a stray terrier. As paranoia grows, he spots French signs, confirming the ruse. Aided by a Resistance nurse and guided by the terrier’s symbolic presence, Peter feigns delirium to mislead a German officer. In a whimsical escape, he flees during an air raid, reaching a Resistance hideout. Recovering in an Allied hospital, Peter learns his intel saved lives, reuniting with the terrier as his RAF crew honors him.
