If last week wasn't enough to prove that DC had a bona fide hit on its hands, Jokers take of $55 million in it second weekend should make it pretty clear. The R-rated character study of Batman's greatest villain has made an astonishing $543 million worldwide in 2 weeks on a budget of $55 million.
The new releases this week had no chance of taking the top spot, but the animated spin on The Addams Family has a good opening weekend of $30.2 million. The film had a big cast including Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, and Allison Janney. The next weeks leading to Halloween may be kind to the spooky family and it should drop off slower than normal with moviegoers wanting some Halloween fare.
Where The Addams Family had some postivie takeaways from its opening Ang Lee and Will Smith had nothing to smile about with Gemini Man. The $140 million action movie crashed with $20.5 million. The movie has not been well reviewed and currently sits at 25% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences that went to see the film were kinder with a B+ Cinemascore, but it looks like there is no saving Will Smith here...either of them.
The only other new release, Jexi starring Adam Devine, placed 8th with $3.1 million barely making a peep.
Judy continued its strong run in a limited number of theaters with $3.2 million and Hustlers should cross $100 million this week.
Next week is a big one for two sequels. Zombieland: Double Tap brings us the sequel fans have wanted for 10 years and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the sequel no one asked for.
