As I said last week sometimes a good R-rated comedy is all you need take your mind off the random day to day monotony. Good Boys opened at #1 with $21 million, exceeding expectations and making it only the second original film to open at #1 this year with the other being Jordan Peele's Us. This is also another win for producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg who can claim victory for another property with "boys" in the title. They produced Good Boys and the Amazon Prime hit The Boys.
Disney may be king of the box office, but Universal has won the past 3 weekends with Hobbs & Shaw and Good Boys. Hobbs & Shaw made $14.1 million in its third weekend and crossed $400 million worldwide. With each week Vin Diesel's fury grows like the might of a thousand suns.
The remaining new releases did not do so well. The Angry Birds Movie opened with $38 million in 2016, but The Angry Birds Movie 2 could only pull in $10.5 million. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, the sequel to 47 Meters Down or the shark movie with Mandy Moore, sunk on arrival with $9 million. The original in 2017 made $62 million with a $ 5 million budget. This new entry into the 47 Meters Down cinematic universe (totally not a thing) had a larger budget of $12 miilion, yet doesn't seem like it will be able to stay afloat. Blinded by the Light was ninth with $4.4 million. The story based around a young person's love of Bruce Sprinsteen's music is a hit with critics and fans that went to see it. It currently sits at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and A- on Cinemascore. Another movie that will miss box office take and may find a following later when it hits home release.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark brought in $10 million in its second weekend and The Lion King kept up its kingly run with $11.9 million. Whether you are wanting Disney to slow down with the live action and CGI remakes or not, the money tells Disney to keep it up.
Next week looks to be a light week with Angel Has Fallen, the third in the series of Gerard Butler movies where he plays secret service agent Mike Banning and the world we all think about with Morgan Freeman as president. Also the bucknuts wild Ready or Not, which I have seen previews for and still haven't an idea about what is happening, and yet I want to go.
